Is Your Laundry Detergent Triggering Your Kids’ Allergies?

By March 29, 2018 November 12th, 2018 No Comments

Laundry detergents are one of those common household products that parents often just mindlessly dump in their grocery carts. Major companies often tout their brand as the most effective in stain removal, having unique perfumes or being the most budget-friendly. It’s easy to be swayed by clever marketing campaigns, but what if these detergents, while delivering on their promises, are also unsuspectingly triggering allergies in your kids and could cause serious health risks to your family?

An allergy occurs when the skin gets inflamed from exposure to a certain substance known as an allergen. Even substances that are usually harmless to most people can cause hypersensitivity. The body’s immune system sees the detergent as a threat and therefore triggers an overreaction.

Symptoms may manifest as an irritation such as red, itchy rashes that appear immediately once the skin is in contact with the allergen, or as contact dermatitis, a delayed allergic reaction that comes out only after repeated exposure. Children are usually more sensitive to chemical residue that stays in the fabric after washing. Their body may react to the allergens in the detergent and symptoms can include swollen eyes, sneezing, or fever. Prolonged exposure to the detergent over time may lead to chronic allergies. Chronic contact dermatitis can cause thickened, dry, scaly skin, pigment changes and hair loss.

Allergens can come in the form of synthetic chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent that has a corrosive effect on skin; fragrances and dyes can also cause hypersensitivity reactions like rashes, wheezing, headaches, stuffy nose; and coconut diethanolamine, another foaming agent that has a high irritation potential. Other potent chemicals include stabilizers and preservatives, which are used to extend product shelf life. These can cause eye and respiratory irritation as well as eczema. Bleach, which may be a part of the detergent, has been known to cause irritations of the skin, eyes, and lungs.

There are several advantages in using detergents with natural ingredients. They are low allergenic, non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Euca is a natural detergent that is effective in dealing with stubborn stains from dirt, rust, or food. It uses 100% natural Australian Eucalyptus oil to clean and deodorise. Aside from its known medicinal and antiseptic qualities, it is also an excellent cleanser to remove grease and grime, so you can be confident that your clothes are spotless and germ-free without the use of toxic chemicals that are not only harmful to your family but also to the environment. To top it off, eucalyptus gives off a refreshing and invigorating fragrance. Euca doesn’t contain synthetic perfumes, Zeolites, SLS, Enzymes, Palm oil, petrochemical surfactants, and corrosive fillers that can irritate your child’s sensitive skin.
