Life is better when the sun is shining. It’s hard to beat rooftop drinks with friends, volleyball on the beach, or a family barbecue on the patio. Indeed, Mr. Golden Sun brings joy, laughter and plenty of fun. But sunny spells are also a time when we must be extra mindful about our health. Being in the scorching Australian sunshine with our skin exposed can be high-risk; our rate of skin cancer is the highest in the world. According to Cancer Council statistics, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Therefore, between the soirées and pool days, it’s crucial that we protect our skin as best we can.
Thankfully for us beach bums, sunscreen is a thing. A good one will provide a strong layer of defence while keeping your skin moisturised and smooth. And now is the perfect time to introduce Euca’s very own sunscreen that will be your skin’s new best friend: AUScreen. Here’s all you need to know.
Euca is passionate about sourcing materials locally, which is we’ve teamed up with Melbourne’s own Ross Cosmetics to develop this sunscreen. Though you may not recognise this name, odds are you’ve used their products before as they manufacture beauty and skincare for many labels. Their long-standing reputation for exceptional quality made them the obvious choice.
Broad spectrum protection
Experts will recommend using a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection. AUScreen ticks that box. But what does this mean for your skin? Put simply, there are two types of UV light that can harm the skin – UVA and UVB. Broad spectrum protection sunscreens like AUScreen protect you from both. UVB rays are the main causes of sunburn and skin cancer. UVA rays, on the other hand, can also cause skin cancer as well as premature ageing. Choosing a product that keeps you safe from both of these threats is a no-brainer.
Sun protection factor (SPF) indicates the level of protection a sunscreen can provide against UVB rays. The higher the SPF, the higher the protection. That’s why experts recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 when exposed to the sun. AUScreen is formulated to keep your skin safe and healthy. That’s why it has an SPF of 50+, for which the heat is no match.
AUScreen is free from parabens and other chemicals such as octinoxate and oxybenzone. This gentle cream won’t irritate your skin, keeping it feeling soft and calm. This makes it an ideal sunscreen for those with sensitive or problematic skin. AUScreen is neither greasy nor tacky upon application, making for comfortable and quick-absorbing wear. This means you don’t have to wait around for it to dry before getting dressed. And with its anti-stain formula, no need to worry about it ruining your clothes.
How to apply AUScreen: The sunscreen should be applied at least 20 mins prior to sun exposure. For adults the minimum recommended application is 5mL (1 tsp) for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face. This equates to 35ml (7 tsp) or a shot glass for a full body application. The sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and more frequently if swimming, sweating, towel drying or participating in physical activity.
AUScreen is available from Euca today in both 500ml and 1l bottles. Order yours here and enjoy some carefree sunshine.
Euca’s sun safe bonus tips
Of course, you shouldn’t rely solely on sunscreen to keep you safe during the hotter months. Here are some other tips to keep in mind.
Limit sun exposure during peak hours
The sun is generally at its strongest between 10am and 2pm. This makes your skin very susceptible to damage. Try to avoid direct exposure during this sweltering heat. Reschedule your run for early morning or evening, and postpone your sunbathing sesh until later in the afternoon. If you must go out and about, stay in shaded areas. Wear a wide-brimmed hat for on-the-go protection.
Always have a bottle of water handy during heatwaves. Soaring temperatures can cause us to perspire more than usual, which can lead to dehydration if we’re not careful. Drinking plenty of water maintains the moisture balance within the body and also provides fluids to keep your body cool and energised in the beating sun.
Wear comfortable clothes
If you’re preparing for a day in the sunshine, dress responsibly. Ditch the tight, heavy fabrics and dark colours. Though you may look chic, these will attract and trap heat, which will make for seriously uncomfortable wearing. Do yourself a favour and wear light, loose-fitting clothing that will let your skin breathe.
Protect your eyes, too
Did you know that the sunlight can affect your eyes too? Over time, the sun’s harsh UV rays can damage our eyesight – often permanently. The skin around your eyes is also very delicate. This is why you should never leave home without a pair of UV protection sunglasses when the sun is out. Staying sun safe and looking cool while doing it? It’s a yes from us.
The sunshine is all about living life to the max. Just make sure to be responsible about it. From all of us at Euca, stay sun safe out there!
